Hinchey's first year as head coach of the Durham Lords men's volleyball program was one to remember as he led the Lords to a 16-2 conference record and an OCAA East Region division title.
At the OCAA championship banquet, Hinchey brought home some hardware as he was named the OCAA east region coach of the year. With 24 wins on the year, the 2010/11 Lords set a Durham College all-time high for victories in a season. The previous record of 23 was set back in 1999/00 and 2005/06.
As Hinchey has built quite an impressive resume though his past experiences as a player, instructor and young coach, the athletic department is looking forward to the bright future of the men's volleyball program.
Hinchey joined Durham College after spending two years as an assistant coach with Melbourne University while on a teaching assignment in Australia. Coaching the Renegades, Hinchey was able to introduce a number of new initiatives to the team's routines, as well as working one on one with players focusing on position specific skills.
Prior to working in Melbourne, Hinchey coached the Under 21 junior varsity team at the University of Western Ontario, creating a development club program for the University. Under his guidance, the Mustang's went on to win a bronze medal at the provincial championship. Hinchey was also a teaching assistant for a volleyball activity course for six years at Western.
Hinchey also attended Western, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in kinesiology (honours) and was a member of the men's volleyball team. He was an Academic All-Canadian and team captain. In the setter position, Hinchey led the Mustang's to the postseason every year he played including the OUA finals during his rookie season. He was named an all-star twice in his OUA career as well as to the all-rookie team.
