DURHAM COLLEGE BASEBALL WINS BIG AGAINST U OF T IN PRESEASON ACTION
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College baseball team (1-0 overall, 0-0 conference) opened their 2008 season with a lopsided 14-2 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in exhibition action Tuesday night at Kinsmen Stadium.
The Lords bats looked to be in midseason form right from the opening pitch as the defending CIBA Ontario Champions scored eleven runs in the first three innings to take a commanding 11-1 lead. The team never looked back from that point on as they cruised to the 14-2 season opening victory.
Both teams had a chance to take a look at their depth in their rotation as several pitching changes were made throughout the night. James Rowe would end up registering the win for the Lords while Bill Hopkins (U of T) picked up the loss.
Durham’s bats were hot as they matched last season’s high of 14 runs in a game (14 vs. York). John Broll and Craig MeGill both had three hits apiece while combining for five RBI’s while Chris Jones, Jon Thibaud and Robert McNab had two hits respectively. McNab picked up right where he left off in 2007 as he was named to the All-Canadian team in just his second season with the Lords.
Durham will now travel to Toronto tomorrow night for a rematch against the Varsity Blues in exhibition action. The team will then open up conference play in Kingston from September 6-7 as they meet the Queen’s University Golden Gaels for back-to-back doubleheaders.
The Lord’s conference home opener will be on Saturday, September 13 as St. Clair College visits Kinsmen Stadium for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
