Lords Register Second Series Split of the Weekend

Game One: Queen’s defeated Durham 11-3
Game Two: Durham defeated Queen’s 11-1

Oshawa, Ont. –
For the second straight day at Kinsmen Stadium, the Durham Lords men’s baseball team (6-2 conference, 8-2 overall) recorded a split in doubleheader action as they dropped game one to Queen’s 11-3 and bounced back with an 11-1 win in game two.

In their first game of the day, Durham could not overcome a disastrous start which saw Queen’s bat through their lineup enroute to eight first inning runs. Lords starting pitcher Jesse Owen (London, Ont.) could not find the plate as he walked five batters and allowed one hit without recording an out prior to being pulled. Lucas Sharpe (Rama, Ont.) entered the game and pitched four innings for Durham but the damage was already done as Queen’s would not relinquish the big lead.

Despite averaging over 13 runs in their four games against Queen’s a week prior, Durham struggled at the plate as they scored three runs on four hits. Queen’s pitchers Dan Osterer and Eric Mutter did an outstanding job, combining for four strikeouts and leading the Gaels to just their second win of the year.

“We looked like all we had to do was show up and we would be handed the win,” commented Sam Dempster, disappointed with his team’s performance. “Our team taking them a little lightly might be an understatement.”

Just as they did 24-hours earlier, Durham bounced back strong in game two as they scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead in the game. The Lords would not leave anything to chance as they added five more runs in the fourth and would go on to win by a final score of 11-1.

Lords freshman shortstop Tyler Mandzuk (Ottawa, Ont.) went 3-for-3 in the game bringing his season average to .778 in eleven plate appearances. In his first start for the Lords, pitcher Sean McGillivray (Midland, Ont.) pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits for the win.

The Lords will look to rebound next weekend as they have back-to-back doubleheaders at Kinsmen Stadium. York will be in town on Saturday (1 p.m.) with St. Clair returning to Oshawa on Sunday (3 p.m.). This will be the Lords final home stand of the 2008 regular season.
