Lords Men’s Baseball Splits Series with St. Clair – Teams Remain Tied for First Place

Game One: St. Clair defeated Durham 3-2
Game Two: Durham defeated St. Clair 7-1

Oshawa, Ont. –
The Durham Lords and St. Clair Saints men’s baseball teams remain tied atop of the CIBA Ontario Standings after splitting a two-game series Saturday afternoon at Kinsmen Stadium.

With St. Clair (5-1 conference) taking the first game of the two-game set, the Lords (5-1 conference, 7-1 overall) 18-game winning streak over CIBA Ontario Opponents was snapped. Putting the game one loss behind them, Durham stormed back in the second game to climb back into a tie for first place in the standings with the Saints.

Lords pitcher Gary Rose (Toronto, Ont.) picked up his second win of the year as he pitched the complete game allowing seven hits and one unearned run while throwing seven strikeouts. Rose has a 2.92 ERA this season with 15 strikeouts.  Matt Rustulka, who picked up St. Clair’s win in the first game, is leading the league with 17 strikeouts this year.

2007 All-Canadian Rob McNab (Bowmanville, Ont.) continued his assault on opposing pitchers as he went 4-for-7 in the two games. Jareth Vallier (Oshawa, Ont.) had an outstanding day at the plate for Durham as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s. Vallier put the crowd into a frenzy with a homerun in the early innings of game one.

This season marks the Saint’s first year in the league after playing an exhibition schedule in 2007. It is apparent that a rivalry has already been built between the teams in just their first two head-to-head games of the year. With four games remaining against one another in 2008, it will be very interesting to see who will earn the regular season pennant and earn a bye to the provincial championship series.

The Lords will be back at it on Sunday afternoon as they are scheduled to take on the Queen’s University Golden Gaels for a doubleheader at Kinsmen Stadium. First pitch will be at 1 p.m.
