Durham College set to take part in the University/College Golf National Championship

VICTORIA - Canada’s top university and college golfers will compete in the tenth playing of the Canadian University/College Championship, conducted by Golf Canada this week at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C.

Cordova is no stranger to the University/College Championship, having hosted the event back in 2008. As that year was the only time in the tournament’s history that the reigning women’s division team champions from the University of British Columbia were beat out by the local University of Victoria Vikes, this year should be an interesting test of the mental tenacity of these student golfers. The men’s team division is also up for grabs, and several schools have a shot at taking the title away from the defending Humber College Hawks.

Durham College enters play as the two-time defending CCAA women’s golf national champions. Tiffany Albath and Kayleigh Kraemer will be joined by Alexandra Down to make up the trio looking to win Durham’s first team at the University/College championship.

At the University/College Championship in 2011, Albath had a top-five finish earning All-Canadian status.

This is the second time Durham’s women’s team will be taking part in the national championship.

David Lang, Sean Perkins, Adam Miller, Kyle Duke and Justin Knaggs will represent Durham College on the men’s side. In 2011, Durham finished in third place in the team competition at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship.

This will be the Lords seventh time taking part in the National Championship. The team’s best showing came in 2006 at the Thornhill Country Club where they finished 12th in the country. That year the team was lead by Will Mitchell who, based on his play at the championship, was selected to represent Canada at the FISU World University Games. Mitchell did not disappoint on the international stage as he finished in eighth place at the FISU games.

Last year’s event was hosted by Durham College at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club.

The Canadian University/College Championship will serve as the Canadian team qualifier for the 2012 World University Golf Championship, which takesplace in Liberec, Czech Republic July 2-7, 2012.

Tournament results will be available at www.golfcanada.ca <http://www.golfcanada.ca> .
