Durham College - Back-to-Back OCAA Golf Champions
QUICK SUMMARY
Women’s Individual - Tiffany Albath (Gold) and Kayleigh Kraemer (Silver)
Women’s Team - Gold
Men’s Team – Bronze
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College golf team continued their dominance on the fairways on Wednesday, winning four medals at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) golf championship including their second straight women's team golf title.
This is the first time in school history that the women’s golf team has won back-to-back provincial championships.
Durham's Tiffany Albath dethroned teammate Kayleigh Kraemer for the women's individual title, as both finished on top of the leaderboard for the second straight year. This year's championship was hosted by St. Lawrence College at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club.
"It's a nice one to have, even though all the scores were not as great as last year," Albath said, explaining that the wet conditions Monday and Tuesday and windy conditions on Wednesday contributed to the high scores.
Albath adds a gold medal to last year's silver by posting back-to-back rounds of 79. Albath's three-round total of 242 was three strokes better than Kraemer's.
For Kraemer, it marks a third OCAA individual medal, after winning silver in 2009 and gold in 2010. Kraemer was a gracious second-place finisher, as she said she was happy to contribute to the winning team.
"We care more about the team finish than the individual," she said.
Albath and Kraemer defeated Georgian's pairing of Jasmine Paton and Nicole Belcourt by 43 shots to give Durham the women's team championship.
This is the first time since 2000 that golfers from the same school have won the OCAA gold and silver medals in two straight years.
On the men’s side, Durham College won the bronze medal in the team competition, finishing four strokes behind Georgian College. Humber won gold for the sixth straight season.
Durham’s David Lang, who was the leader heading into the final round, shot a nine-over 81 to finish in third place but due to a scorekeeping error was disqualified from the championship.
Adam Miller (76-72-78) of Durham finished tied for seventh place in the individual competition, four strokes out of medal contention. Mark Hoffman from Humber won the individual title for the second straight year.
Other Durham golfers included David Pinkerton (T13), Sean Perkins (T28), Kyle Roy (T33) and Kyle Duke (T44).
Albath and Kraemer will look to defend Durham's national women's golf championship later this month. The 2011 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championship, hosted by Holland College, will take place Oct. 18-21 at Brudenell River Golf Course in Roseneath, P.E.I. Albath and Kraemer are the defending CCAA individual silver and bronze medalists, respectively.
