Durham College named the most active campus in Ontario
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Ontario Colleges Committee on Campus Recreation (OCCCR) recently announced that Durham College won the 2010-11 Active Living Challenge and was named the most active campus in Ontario.
“The Active Living Challenge was a great experience for the campus that highlighted the high level of traffic and use of the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre and Flex Centre,” said Angie Wood, fitness coordinator at Durham College and UOIT. “The institution strives to provide diverse opportunities to keep up with the students’ needs and desires for physical activity. We are thrilled at earning the distinction of ‘The Most Active Campus in Ontario!’ ”
Students across Ontario took part in the month long challenge by filling out sheets tracking their physical activity. In the month of January, participants on campus at Durham College tracked 161,250 minutes of physical activity, the most of the 32 members in the OCCCR.
“On campus, many students live healthy lifestyles and enjoy physical activity,” said Wood. “Whether it’s rollerblading, hitting the Flex or participating in a pickup basketball game, students love to stay active.”
Participants who took the challenge at Durham College won weekly and monthly prizes. Lauren Fuentes was the grand prize winner as she won a Norco bike.
This was the first time that the OCCCR recognized the most active campus in Ontario.
The active living challenge is scheduled to return to campuses across Ontario in 2011-12. For more information on the FLEX centre, visit www.campusrecreationcentre.com . For more information on the OCCCR, visit the campus recreation section of www.ocaa.com.
