ADIDAS $25K grand prize benefits UOIT and Durham College
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Department of Athletics and its facilities shared by UOIT and Durham College will be that much better thanks to the $25,000 prize won in the Adidas Challenge last year.
The campus Soccer facility "Vaso's Field" will see an electronic scoreboard installed and in place for next season to provide something that has not been present since the field opened in 2004. A set of ten (10) Monarch team training stationary bikes have also been added to the Campus Ice Centre for use by the UOIT Ridgebacks Men's & Women's Hockey teams, and the CRWC twenty year old scoreboards in Gyms 1 & 2 will be getting a much needed retrofit upgrade to make them more efficient energy wise and also eliminate the need for changing the old fashioned individual light bulbs. The new LED technology will be installed into the existing quad scoreboards system before the end of this season.
The big prize of $25k from Adidas contributed to the overall costs of making these three improvements happen. Although a University based Challenge, the end result benefits the whole campus athletics wise and therefore benefits Durham College Athletic programs as well.
"I think the department based on feedback from teams, combined with its ongoing list of improvements came up with some great projects that will improve our athletic facilities overall and hence improve our programs,” stated Ken Babcock, Director of Athletics. "We would certainly like to thank all those who took the time to go on-line and vote last year and boosted UOIT to the top spot and the $25k grand prize. We would also like to thank Adidas Canada for providing this great opportunity and what it has meant to our campus and our athletic programs."
The 2011 Adidas Challenge is now well underway and we would love to win the grand prize and make it back-to-back years! The $30,000 Adidas grand prize this year is down to the final round and UOIT is in the lead.
