Courtney Small goes pro in England

SUSSEX, UK – The Worthing Thunder Basketball Club is delighted to announce the signing of former Durham College student-athlete Courtney Small (Oshawa, Ont.) for the upcoming 2011-12 English Basketball League (EBL) Division 1 season.

Small, an offensive minded 6’3 combo guard comes to the Thunder fresh off his collegiate career at Durham where he averaged over 16 points-per-game in his final year. He leaves the college as the third highest scorer in Lords history with 1,045 career points.

“My four years at Durham College were great,” said Small after signing the contract. “I want to thank everyone in the athletic department and the faculty for all of the time and care they gave me at the college. My time at Durham allowed me to grow as an individual and helped me achieve my goals.”

This will be Courtney’s first overseas experience and he is looking forward to playing for Worthing this season.

“I’m very excited and generally overwhelmed of how fast I was signed. I’m glad to be a part of the Thunder family,” Small said.

“I’ve heard good things about Worthing and how they are rebuilding so I wanted to be a part of that. Plus my family lives down the road in Bognor, so being close to them was another reason why I wanted to play for Worthing.”

Small has already taken part in a few of Thunder’s off-season scrimmages organized by coach Gary Smith and is settling in quickly to life in Sussex.

“It’s been fun. I’ve met a lot of cool guys. I’ve also spoken to coach Gary and he’s outlined what he wants and I’m just really looking forward to starting,” Small commented.

Small won a number of awards for Durham College, including the 2009-10 Bonnie Ginter-Brown leadership award for his involvement in the community. He was also an OCAA all-star.

Small will make his Worthing debut when the Thunder host the Guildford Heat on September 10th at the Worthing Leisure Centre. Tip-off is at 7.30 p.m. in a game dedicated to the late Billy Hungrecker.
