Durham College/UOIT women’s football help in the fight against breast cancer
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College/UOIT women's flag football team took part in their inaugural season of play in 2010-11 which was a success on and off the field. The program was able to participate in several tournaments throughout the season while fundraising for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society.
Coached by former football players and students on campus (Michael Nicolau – head coach, Josh Guest, Konrad Young and Keith Kling), DC/UOIT athletes participated in a number of tournaments to prepare for the OUA Annual Letterman Tournament at Laurier University, which are also fundraisers for breast cancer research.
Beginning in November, the team took part in various training opportunities and practices to learn the new skills and strategy of football.
To start of the season, the team competed in the McMaster University Season Opener and the Queen's Exhibition Tournament to kick start the cold and rigorous season. The squad comprised of students from DC/UOIT was able to pull off their first successful win at the Queen's tournament on February 6th against the Gaels.
At the year-end Laurier tournament, the team faced some tough competition going head-to-head with some of Ontario's top teams who are have had plenty of veteran experience. Although the team played some very close games, DC/UOIT was unable to squeeze out a win and advance to the playoffs.
The women's flag football team is looking forward to next year's season where new initiatives will be taking place to create awareness for new recruits and fundraising initiatives as athletes.
