Lords end streak against Seneca and remain perfect - Durham 4-0 against Seneca on Tuesday
Women’s Basketball: Durham defeated Seneca 72-67
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham Lords ended an 11-game losing streak against Seneca and kept their (6-0) unbeaten record intact Tuesday night, defeating the Sting 72-67 in OCAA women’s basketball action.
The last time Durham had beaten Seneca in women’s basketball prior to Tuesday was January 25, 2005.
The win moves Durham into a first place tie in the OCAA east region with Algonquin (6-0).
Durham had to work for the win. It took four-for-four shooting from the free-throw line in the final minute to hold off a late rally by the visitors.
“We’ve really been working on our free-throw shooting, and it showed,” said Durham coach Tim Baulk, ChPC.
Those key shots negated a late Seneca charge, fuelled by a tough pressing defence that cut the Durham lead to 67-65 in the final minute. Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.), who paced the winners with 17 points, had a key steal to thwart the Seneca run with 40 seconds left and then added two foul shots with 15 seconds remaining for the icing on the cake.
Baulk wasn’t surprised the Lords jumped out to an 18-point lead and scored a total of 72 against a quality Seneca opponent, but said he was “disappointed we couldn’t keep it. We don’t have the killer instinct yet.”
Durham held a 30-23 halftime lead. Six minutes into the second half, Durham had opened up a 48-30 lead, but that was cut to 60-51 by the 13-minute mark. Durham led 65-55 at 15:20.
“We were expecting it to be really tough. We knew we’d have to play well tonight,” said Baulk.
Laura Pacevicius and Jessica Newton scored 14 and 13 respectively for Durham, while Kelsey Hare added 10. Tamara Nembhard of Seneca led all scorers with 21 and Monique Webley pitched in with 17 for the Sting.
Next home action for the Lords is Tuesday, November 30 when they host St. Lawrence of Kingston. In the meantime, they’re on the road against Algonquin (6-0) for a match-up of unbeaten teams in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon.
