Durham College set to tee off at the University/College Championship
Fredericton, N.B. (Golf Canada) – Canada’s top University and College golfers will convene at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B., from May 30-June 3 to compete in the eighth playing of the University/College Championship, conducted by Golf Canada.
In all, 156 male and female golfers from across Canada will travel to Fredericton to compete for both team and individual titles at this year’s event. The field will be comprised of 20 men’s and 10 women’s teams as well as six individuals. The competition begins Sunday, May 30 with a practice round and opening ceremonies at Kingswood Park. Following Wednesday’s third round, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men’s and the top five women’s teams, as well as any individuals within 15 strokes of the lead.
“This is an exciting tournament where we get to watch some of the best collegiate golfer’s across Canada compete,” said Golf Canada Tournament Director Alison Turcotte. “The improved strength of the player field over the last several years has truly made this one of the premier championships in Canada, and it continues to get better every year.”
Representing Durham College at the event will be Rob Lewis, Don Shaw, Justin Knaggs, Brad Hickey and Robbie Untinen.
The Lords had plenty of success this past season on the college circuit. The team took home their second consecutive bronze medal in the overall team competition at the OCAA championship while finishing in second place at the Fanshawe and Elmira Invitational tournaments. Following the season, Hickey was named the “Gerry Pettit” MVP while Untinen was named the Rookie of the Year.
“We have a great group of guys representing the school this year,” said head coach Mike Duggan. “We’ve got the ability to make it to the final day and do very well. We are flying under the radar so we have a good chance to turn some heads at this tournament.”
This will be the Lords fifth time taking part in the University/College Championship, conducted by Golf Canada. The team’s best showing came in 2006 at the Thornhill Country Club where they finished 12th in the country. That year the team was led by Will Mitchell who, based on his play at the championship, was selected to represent Canada at the FISU World University Games. Mitchell did not disappoint on the international stage as he finished in eighth place at the FISU games. Mitchell, along with former Lords teammate Tyler Martin have played on the Canadian Tour.
As part of Golf Canada’s Pathway to Champions, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes (four rounds) of play will earn an exemption into the 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at London Hunt and Country Club in London, Ont., and the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship held at Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville, B.C., respectively.
