Andrew Hinchey named men's volleyball coach at Durham College

OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College athletic director Ken Babcock announced the hiring of Andrew Hinchey as the head coach of the DC men's volleyball program. He replaces Gord Williamson who recently retired after 13 successful seasons with the Lords.

“I am very excited about this year and really looking forward to filling my new position as head coach of the Durham Lords men's volleyball program,” said Hinchey. “With that said, I also recognize that I have very big shoes to fill, following Gord Williamson who has done an outstanding job with the program over the past 13 years.”

As Hinchey has built quite an impressive resume though his past experiences as a player, instructor and young coach, the athletic department is looking forward to the bright future of the men's volleyball program.

“We are thrilled to announce the addition of Andrew to our all-star coaching staff,” said Babcock. “We feel his energy, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game of volleyball will be a great asset to our program. The student-athlete experience will benefit very much based on his attitude and professional demeanor.”

Hinchey joins Durham College after spending two years as an assistant coach with Melbourne University while on a teaching assignment in Australia. Coaching the Renegades, Hinchey was able to introduce a number of new initiatives to the team's routines, as well as working one on one with players focusing on position specific skills.

“Volleyball is my passion, and it has been since I was young,” said Hinchey. “I have coached, played and studied this game excessively throughout my life. Most recently I coached in Australia, where I was working for one of the top state league teams in Melbourne. Based on my experience, I have an in depth understanding of the amount of hard work and dedication required to produce a winning club.”

Prior to working in Melbourne, Hinchey coached the Under 21 junior varsity team at the University of Western Ontario, creating a development club program for the University. Under his guidance, the Mustang's went on to win a bronze medal at the provincial championship. Hinchey was also a teaching assistant for a volleyball activity course for six years at Western.

Hinchey also attended Western, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in kinesiology (honours) and was a member of the men's volleyball team. He was an Academic All-Canadian and team captain. In the setter position, Hinchey led the Mustang's to the postseason every year he played including the OUA finals during his rookie season. He was named an all-star twice in his OUA career as well as to the all-rookie team.

Hinchey will take over for the Lords who finished with a 14-4 conference record and advanced to the OCAA semi-finals last year. The Lords have won two titles and 15 medals overall at the OCAA championships since 1983.
