Lords add DC soccer veteran to coaching staff

OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College men's soccer head coach Stan Bombino is proud to announce the hiring of Vic Rocha as an assistant coach. Rocha makes his return to the college after playing with the Lords in the early 1980's.

“I am thrilled to be able to welcome Vic back to Durham College,” said Bombino. “He brings a wealth of experience to our coaching staff that will help lead our team to the next level.”

Rocha brings to Durham vast experience in the game as a player, coach and mentor at the highest youth levels in Canada and the U.S., coupled with proven managerial experience and a provincial B license coaching qualification. He is no stranger to the game as he has been involved with the soccer community for the past 30 years.

Rocha has achieved tremendous success as both a player and a coach. His playing experience in the last 20 years has developed at the youth level and led to the senior men's semi-professional level. Rocha had plenty of success with the Lords as he led the team to back-to-back bronze medals as well as a silver medal in the early 1980's. He also received immense individual recognition during his collegiate career.

He was also an integral part of the Oshawa Italia FC, who won five consecutive league championships before moving up to the Toronto & District (T&D) premier league. After several years in the National Soccer League at the semi-professional level, Rocha retired and used his passion for the game to become a successful coach.

His impressive coaching resume includes coaching men's senior level in the T&D Premier Division, four years with the boys and girls Durham Regional Development Program, seven years with Oshawa Turul and Whitby Iroquois Youth Rep Programs, and five years with the Toronto Lynx Youth Academy Super Y league. His current project is as a youth development coach for Peterborough City and being the assistant coach with the Darlington U-21 Provincial Team.

Rocha has a reputation for building strong athletes and even stronger relationships. He will no doubt have an immediate positive impact on the Durham Lords men's soccer varsity program.

The Lords open up their 2010 campaign against the Centennial Colts on September 12 in Scarborough. Their home opener will take place two weeks later on September 25 when the Fleming Knights pay a visit to the college. Game time is at 2 p.m.
