Durham College Athlete of the Year set to take part in the all-star charity shootout
Hoops that help: Fifth annual All-Star Charity Shootout features Clash of the Charities

TORONTO –
2009-10 Durham College athlete of the year Eric Smith is set to take part in the fifth annual All-Star Charity Shootout (ASCS) on Saturday, July 17 hosted by York University. Smith will be joined by some of Canada's best men's basketball players as well as CFL legend Michael “Pinball” Clemons as they raise money in support of two worthy charities; War Child Canada and the Michael “Pinball” Clemons foundation.

The event is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. with some of the country's most talented hoopsters from college and university, in addition to those playing professional basketball in Europe, as they battle in the Clash of the Charities.

Smith, a graduate of Jean Vanier, will represent team War Child coached by Bob Bain of York University. Smith had an excellent sophomore season with the Lords as he took his game to new heights in 2009/10. The law and security major was dominant among big men in the OCAA as he led the province with 188 rebounds. Smith also finished the year averaging 19.2 points per game, the seventh highest total in Durham College history.

Smith is very familiar with his all-star status, as he was named an OCAA first team all-star and was selected to represent the Lords at the OCAA all-star game. Smith is flying up the all-time Durham College scoring charts as he sits sixth with 756 career points, passing legends such as Ken Upshaw and Augusto Duquesne last season.

The winning team's charity will receive 60 per cent of the proceeds with the remaining 40 per cent directed to the other charity. To celebrate the event's fifth year, guests will also be able to enjoy a free barbecue and live entertainment while Flow 93.5's DJ P-Plus will be spinning tunes during the game.

OCAA all-time leading scorer and Durham College graduate Anthony Batchelor took part in the game in 2006 and 2008.

Tickets are still available for only $25 for adults, $20 for students (with valid identification); $10 for children aged seven to 15; and children under seven are free!
