Coach Bombino optimistic heading into the season
OSHAWA, Ont. – With 12 years of experience and over 100 wins as head coach of the Durham College men's soccer program, head coach Stan Bombino knows a thing or two about winning. Heading into the 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's soccer season, Bombino thinks he is building a team that will contend for the Lords fourth provincial title.
“Training sessions opened up this week and I was very pleased with the quality of players that attended,” said Bombino. “We have an excellent group of freshmen joining our veterans this year, who will fit well into our system and style of play.”
Among the new recruits are Durham region soccer players Luke Morrison and Mike Bowerman.
Luke Morrison (Ajax, Ont.) joins the Lords after playing with the Ajax U-21 men's team in the Ontario Provincial Soccer League. Luke is a talented player who will bring size and strength to the team. Morrison is enrolled in the pre-service firefighter education and training program at Durham College.
Bowerman (Whitby, Ont.) was in the competitive Central Soccer League, playing high caliber soccer for a number of years. Coach Bombino will look for the strong midfielder to immediately take a leadership role for the squad using his strength and knowledge of the game to lead to Lords to success.
Although training sessions are already in session, official tryout's do not begin until August 31 st , Bombino has his squad playing in a number of exhibition games to get ready for the season (full schedule below). The Lords will take on non-conference opponents including the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Winstars Academy and the Toronto Lynx Academy prior to the start of the regular season.
“We are playing against some quality opponents in preparation for the season,” said Bombino. “Once the regular season begins, our team should be well prepared and ready to turn some heads in the league.”
In 12 years as head coach of the Lords, Bombino has compiled a 106-49-16 overall record, en route to nine play appearances. The lords will open their regular season on Sunday, September 11 at Centennial College. Their home opener will be on Saturday, September 258 against the Fleming Knights.
