Smith, Vallier, Dewey and Kraemer named Durham College Athletes of the Year

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College athletic department held the 41st annual Athletic Banquet Thursday night at the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Association Hall in Oshawa. For only the second time in Durham College history, there were co-overall athletes of the year for both the male and female categories.

Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) of the men’s basketball team and Jareth Vallier (Kingston, Ont.) of the men’s baseball team took home male athlete of the year honours while Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) of the women’s fastball team and Kayleigh Kraemer (Andernach, Germany) of the women’s golf team were named the female athletes of the year.

Smith, a third year forward on the men’s basketball team was named the OCAA player of the year and a CCAA All-Canadian in 2010-11. He led the Lords to the OCAA championship for the first time since 1998 and was the OCAA scoring and rebounding champion averaging 21.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. This marks Smith’s second consecutive Durham College athlete of the year award.

Vallier, a third year infielder with the baseball team led Durham to the CIBA Ontario Title and a final four appearance at the national championship, where he was named to the all-tournament team posting a .429 batting average. During the Lords perfect 16-0 regular season, Vallier averaged .435 at the plate while leading the province in home runs and RBI’s.

Dewey, a third year short stop with the women’s fastball team won her third straight OCAA player of the year award in 2010 while leading the Lords to an OCAA championship and a national bronze medal. She led the league in average (.677), hits (21) and runs (20) and is the OCAA’s career batting leader with a .559 all-time average.

Kraemer, a second year member of the women’s golf team won the OCAA individual golf title and a CCAA individual bronze medal on the links in 2010. Paired up with Tiffany Albath, the Lords also won the OCAA and CCAA team titles – marking Durham’s first women’s national championship.

1994-95 is the only other year Durham College had four athletes of the year. That season, Martin McDonald and Mike Stauffer won the male awards while Tanya Becker and Joanie Fisher won the female awards.

It was a night of celebration as the college took some time to look back and reflect on another successful year. There were plenty of special presentations made over the course of the evening including honoring the achievements of all of the student-athletes.

Other big winners on the night included Tiffany Albath (Bad Marienberg, Germany) and Mackenzie Clugston (Whitby, Ont.) who took home the freshman athlete of the year awards.

Albath, was the other half of a dynamite duo for the women’s golf team finishing with a silver medal at the OCAA championship behind teammate Kraemer, and a matching silver medal at Nationals in Kamloops, B.C. The women’s golf team also won the overall team of the year honours.

Clugston of the baseball team, posted a .333 batting average with 10 hits and 10 RBI’s. The bat wasn’t what made his year so impressive though as the second baseman made a number of key defensive plays in pressure situations during the Lords season.

The Bonnie Ginter-Brown Leadership Award is annually presented to the overall male and female athletes who best exemplify outstanding leadership in the pursuit of excellence. This year’s honour went to Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) of the women's basketball team and Nur Osman (Whitby, Ont.) of the baseball team.
