September has been a month to remember for Durham College athletics

OSHAWA, Ont. –
The Durham College athletic program has excelled in the month of September earning national and provincial recognition for their achievements.

Most recently earning provincial top honours was Durham College women’s golfer Kayleigh Kraemer, who was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) athlete of the week.

Kraemer, a first year student-athlete in the professional golf management program, won the first two invitational tournaments of the season claiming the Fanshawe Invitational and DC Open titles. Kraemer looks to become only the second Durham College golfer to win the OCAA female title at the upcoming provincial championship. Stephanie Brown won gold for Durham in 2005.

On the men’s side, the Durham College golf team has put up great results collecting podium finishes at the Fanshawe Invitational, DC Open, and Elmira Invitational. The Lords hope to carry their great play into the OCAA provincial championship which will take place in Welland from October 5-7.

The Durham College women’s soccer team was named OCAA team of the week to start the season. Behind the leadership of first year head coach Dave Staley, the Lords have gone 6-0-0 and are ranked sixth in the national rankings. Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) is on the verge of history sitting four goals shy of breaking the Durham College all-time career scoring record (Brittany Micucci - 35 career goals).

The men’s soccer team has also had a tremendous start to their season posting a 4-1-1 record and currently sit in first place in the Central East region. Head coach Stan Bombino has his team playing at the top of their game as they look to qualify for the OCAA postseason.

The Durham College women’s fastball team has been on a roll after winning their second straight CAN-AM Classic title. The Lords are also in the hunt for their 12th regular season pennant in 13 years sitting with a 5-1 regular season record and have outscored their opponents 53-11. The Lords will have a shot at a National title this year as they are taking part in the 2009 Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Championship from October 10-12.

After a slow start, the Durham College baseball team has turned their season around after a 4-0 weekend to improve to 6-6, good enough for second place in the CIBA Ontario Conference standings. The Lords close out their season with a home and home series against Queen’s University, with Sunday’s action taking place at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium at 1/3 p.m. Head coach Sam Dempster picked up his 250th win with the Lords this past weekend. The Lords will be hosting the CIBA National Championship from October 23-25.
