Lords keep their shutout streak alive with a convincing 4-0 win
Women’s Soccer: Durham defeated Centennial 4-0
SCARBOROUGH, Ont. – The Durham Lords women’s soccer team picked up their fourth consecutive shutout victory of the season as they defeated the Centennial Colts by a final score of 4-0. Saturday’s game in Scarborough completed the season sweep over the Colts, as Durham picked up an 8-0 win over Centennial on Thursday night.
”It was a good game today,” said Durham head coach Dave Staley. “The team worked hard and adjusted to the smaller field. I thought the team did a great job of moving the ball around.”
Durham is now 4-0-0 on the season and have outscored their opponents 35-0. The Lords entered the week as the eleventh ranked team in the country and fourth in the province.
The Lords scoring was distributed throughout the lineup as Brianna Heard (Bowmanville, Ont.), Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.), Kirsten Walker (Whitby, Ont.) and Taryn Nicholson (Newcastle, Ont.) all scored in the match. Watts and Heard have scored in all four games for Durham while Walker and Nicholson have scored in three.
Watts has now scored 31 career goals, tying her for sixth all-time in OCAA career scoring with Denise Morey of St. Lawrence College who played from 1991-1992 with the Vikings. Watts is only four goals back of former teammate Brittany Micucci who holds the Durham record for most career goals.
Goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Oshawa, Ont.) recorded her fourth straight shutout for Durham, turning aside any offence Centennial had to offer.
Durham will return to Vaso’s Field on Friday, September 25 with a game against the East leading Algonquin Thunder (2-1-0). Kick-off is at 6 p.m.
