Durham College women’s soccer team continue their winning ways
Women’s Soccer: Durham defeated Centennial 8-0
OSHAWA, Ont. - The nationally ranked Durham College women’s soccer team continued their dominance over OCAA opponents as they defeated the Centennial Colts 8-0 at Vaso’s Field on Thursday night.
In three games this season, Durham has rolled over the competition outscoring their opponents 31-0. Despite the one-sided results, head coach Dave Staley sees a lot of room for improvement from his team.
“We need to work better together as a team if we want to achieve our goals,” said Staley. “In our current stretch of playing four games in seven days, we have not had much time to practice and correct our mistake. We will continue to work hard together and look to improve.”
Freshman Brianna Heard (Bowmanville, Ont.), Kirsten Walker (Whitby, Ont.) and Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) all had two goals apiece in the win while Jenn Sheenan (Whitby, Ont.) and Breanna Weisgerber (Ajax, Ont.) added singles. Morgan Kelly (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up her third consecutive shutout.
Watts now has 30 goals in her career and trails former teammate Brittany Micucci by just five for the Durham College all-time scoring record, set last season. Watts is sixth in all-time provincial scoring with Micucci sitting in second.
The Lords had a set back on Thursday night as veteran defender Krista Metcalf (Newmarket, Ont.) went down with a head injury. Going for the ball in the second half, Metcalf collided hard with Heard and went down. Metcalf will most likely be out for the Lords next game which will be the back half of the home and home series. The game will take place on Saturday afternoon in Scarborough at 1 p.m. Centennial is 0-2-0 this season while Durham is 3-0-0.
Durham will return home on Friday, September 25 with a game against the Algonquin Thunder. Kick-off at Vaso’s Field is at 6 p.m.
