Durham College baseball starts off their season in unfamiliar territory

Baseball
Game One – St. Clair defeated Durham 12-2
Game Two – St. Clair defeated Durham 4-3

WINDSOR, Ont. – The Durham College baseball team (0-4 CIBA) was on the wrong end of a series sweep this weekend as they fell in four straight games to the St. Clair Saints.

”Our team has a lot of work to do in a short period of time,” said Sam Dempster, head coach of the Lords. “I was glad to see the team compete better in the second game but we still fell short. We will have to work a lot harder to be where we want to be.”

In the first game on Sunday, the Lords looked out of sync as they fell to the Saints 12-2, with the game ending after only five innings. Starting pitcher James Rowe could not solve the Saints lineup as he allowed nine runs in the first three innings of play. Saints starting pitcher BJ Harris pitched acomplete game, allowing two runs on two hits.

The Lords bounced back in game two and looked as if they were  about to win their first game of the year holding a 3-1 lead going into the final inning. After allowing a couple of base hits, St. Clair’s Derek Siddall tripled to drive in two runs to tie up the game. With two outs, St. Clair pinch hitter Curtis Waggott managed to beat out a throw to first to drive in Siddall for the walk off run.

Sitting at 0-4, the Lords sit are in last place in the conference standings.

Durham will return to Oshawa next weekend where they look to bounce back in their home opener on Saturday, September 19 against York University. Action at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium begins at 1 p.m. The Lords will host the Saints at 1 and 3 p.m. the following day.
