Lords pick up three points in season opener

Men’s Soccer: Durham College defeated St. Lawrence College 2-1

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College men’s soccer team (1-0-0 OCAA) got their season off to a good start as they picked up three big points Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Lawrence College 2-1.

“It was a good way to start to the season,” said Durham College head coach Stan Bombino. “We had some early butterflies that put us behind, but we fought back hard and picked up the win.”

The Vikings struck first with a goal 15 minutes into the game, but it was all Durham from that point forward as they took control of the game.

Durham tied things up in the late stages of the first half as Jordan Sutherland (Oshawa, Ont.) found a way to get the ball in the back of the net as he was falling down. Durham freshman Agya Oppong-Kyekyeku (Etobicoke, Ont.) would score the game winning goal 12 minutes into the second half, giving the Lords the opening day win.

One season ago, Durham fell to St. Lawrence 1-0 and missed out on the playoffs by a single point. Bombino did not want a repeat performance against the Vikings to start off this year.

“The entire team played well today,” said Bombino. “Travis had a great game in net, giving the team the necessary confidence to push forward. I was pleased with the overall effort of our club today.”

The Lords will be in action three times next week, beginning with a home game on Tuesday, September 15 against George Brown College at 8 p.m. Durham will turn around quickly with back-to-back games against Centennial College. The Colts will visit DC on Thursday, September 17 at 8 p.m. followed by a match in Scarborough on Saturday, September 19 at 3 p.m.
