Kraemer claims silver at OCAA Golf Championship – DC men’s team wins bronze

WELLAND, Ont. – The Durham Lords golf team won two medals at the 2009 OCAA Golf Championship on Wednesday as Kayleigh Kraemer finished in second place in the individual competition while the men’s team finished in third place in the team competition.

”I was really proud of our team,” said Mike Duggan, Durham College golf head coach. “With all of the pressure of golfing at the provincial stage in that type of weather, our entire team did a great job to step up their game and win two medals.”

During play of Wednesday’s final round, golfers had to contend with a lot of rain and heavy winds, playing havoc on the scorecards.

Durham would finish the three day championship with a total score of 923, just 15 shots behind the first place Humber Hawks. The Lords entered final round play tied with Fanshawe College for third place, but managed to puld away and finish 15 strokes better than the Falcons to claim the bronze medal.

Kayleigh Kraemer of Durham College won the OCAA silver medal, finishing the championship with a three day total of 244 (75-80-89). Kraemer ended up 13 strokes behind Danielle Green of Humber College, who won the OCAA gold medal. For Durham College, it was the best finish for a female golfer at the OCAA championship since Stephanie Brown won the provincial title in 2005.

”Kayleigh did a great job on the course all week,” said Duggan. “She is very proud of her performance and is looking forward to representing Durham at the national championship in Windsor.”

Durham’s Adam Lewis was one of only 11 golfers to finish with a score under 80 on Wednesday, as he shot a seven-over par 79. Lewis finished tied with teammate Brad Hickey for seventh place in the men’s individual competition, nine strokes behind back-to-back OCAA champion Mike Zizek of Humber College. Rounding out Durham’s top scorers was Rob Lewis (234), Don Shaw (238), Robbie Untinen (247) and Justin Knaggs (249).

”We played well as a team,” said Duggan. “When someone had an off round, a teammate was there to pick them up. That is what being part of a team is all about.”

Next week, the Durham College golf team will head to Windsor, Ont. to take part in the 2009 PING Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf Open Championship hosted by St. Clair College. The event taking place from October 13-16 will be held at the Ambassador Golf Club.

Course Information
LochNess Links golf course was built in 2000 and is a rolling landscape of testy mounds, 110 bunkers, water, fescue and bentgrass with the occasional tree. Besides the pot bunkers, there are seven ponds to contend with and strong par-3s, including the 245-yard 8th hole. Accuracy is vital in playing LochNess Links and players will need to keep their ball in the fairway to stay clear of the rough, the bunkers and the mounding.

Championship Format
The men’s team championship will consist of five player teams competing in 54 holes of stroke play with the top four individual scores counting toward the team total. Team play after the first round will be divided to Division I and Division II. The top half of the teams (including ties) will move to Division I and the remaining teams will be in Division II. The women’s team championship will consist of three player teams competing in 54 holes of stroke play with a minimum of two individual scores counting towards the team total.
