Lords stung by Seneca in an OCAA women’s soccer shootout – Undefeated streak at Vaso’s Field comes to an end

Women’s Soccer: Seneca defeated Durham 5-4

OSHAWA, Ont.
– It was a shootout at Vaso’s Field on Sunday afternoon as Seneca and Durham College (two nationally ranked teams) combined for nine goals, battling it out for top spot in the Central East region. In the end, it was the Seneca Sting who would walk away with three points as they picked up a 5-4 victory over the Durham Lords.

Today’s home loss ends Durham’s amazing 33 game undefeated streak on Vaso’s Field, dating back to the opening of the field.

It also marks the Lords first loss of the season, as they fall to 6-1-0 while Seneca moves into first place with a 7-1-0 record. The two teams will meet in North York before the season ends, where first place will be on the line. Both teams are nationally ranked as Durham began the week ranked sixth and Seneca sat in the seventh position.

”We were not sharp on defence in today’s game,” said Durham College head coach Dave Staley. “We will have to regroup for next Wednesday if we want to have a shot at the regional title.”

The Lords will travel to Peterborough on Wednesday, October 7 where they will take on the Fleming Knights at 6 p.m. Fleming upset Seneca 3-2 earlier this week, handing the Sting their only loss of the season.

Ruth Holland of Seneca scored three goals in the win, giving her nine goals this season. Kirsten Walker (Whitby, Ont.) scored two goals for Durham, while Shira Wickenheiser (Duchess, Ont.) and Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) added singles.

With 33 career goals, Watts is trailing Brittany Micucci by only two goals for the Durham College all-time career scoring record (35 career goals). She is also leading the league in scoring averaging 1.86 goals per game.
