Lords look impressive in Peterborough – 2-0 to start the season

Women’s Basketball: Durham defeated Fleming 71-33

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – With a 71-33 victory over Fleming College on Friday night, the Durham College women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 to start the 2009-10 OCAA regular season.

"It's great to be 2-0 and the team deserves it,” said head coach Tim Baulk, ChPC. “It was a total team effort tonight. They have been working hard and the team is really coming together. Hopefully we will continue to grow and win next week against Loyalist."

Everyone in the Lords lineup scored on Friday with veteran Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) leading the way with 19 points. Emery is leading the OCAA in scoring this season averaging 21 points per game. Freshman Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) also contributed 14 points in the win.

Soccer fans are used to seeing Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) scoring on the pitch, but she showed on Friday that she knows something about scoring on the hard court draining 11 points in her OCAA basketball debut.

Sarah Facey of the Knights had a game high 26 points in the losing effort.

”Our veteran players (Tomek and Emery) played solid games sharing the duties at point and putting pressure on the Fleming guards,” said Baulk. “The rookies also contributed and continued to impress with their willingness to lead the team and score.”

The Lords are in first place in the East region after their 2-0 start. In their two wins, Durham has outscored their opponents 140-81.

The Lords will make their home debut on Friday, November 6 against the Loyalist Lancers of Belleville, Ont. Tip off at the CRWC is at 6 p.m.
