Day one of the CIBA National Championship in the books… Almost!

CIBA National Championship - Day One Results
Western defeated St. Clair 9-0
Ottawa defeated Concordia 8-1
*Durham leads Cape Breton 14-4
(top of the sixth inning – play suspended due to rain – game will be resumed tomorrow morning)

OSHAWA, Ont. – Day one of the CIBA National Baseball Championship has come to an end after a cold and rainy day at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium. Two of the scheduled three games were completed with Western and Ottawa picking up day one victories, while the Durham/Cape Breton Match was suspended due to rain at the beginning of the sixth inning.

Day two will begin with the completion of the Durham/Cape Breton, beginning in the morning at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium. Action will follow as scheduled at Kirky Field and Kinsmen Memorial stadium.

The OUA champion Western Mustangs opened the championship up with a bang as they scored four first inning runs to take the early lead. The Mustangs would add on two more runs in the third and three more in and never looked back as they secured the 9-0 opening day win.

In game two, the Concordia Stingers would get out to an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the first inning, but Ottawa would storm back scoring in the next five consecutive innings to take an 8-1 lead and eventually the win. Friday’s win was a little bit of payback for the Gee-Gees, as Concordia had defeated them in the Northern Conference championship one week prior.

In Durham’s opening round match against the Atlantic champion Cape Breton Capers, the only thing that could stop the Lords bats was the rain. Durham would score 14 times over the first five innings to take a ten run lead. After the conclusion of the fifth inning, the umpires had decided that the rain was coming down too hard and that play would be suspended until tomorrow morning (game summaries including players of the game below).
