Durham College will play for gold - Lords knock off the top ranked Humber Hawks
OCAA Semi-Finals (Women’s Soccer)
Durham defeated Humber 1-0
OCAA Gold Medal Game
Saturday, October 24 - Durham vs. Fanshawe (3 p.m.)
OSA Soccer Centre – Vaughan, Ont.
VAUGHAN, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team will be playing foe the provincial title as they knocked off the Humber Hawks 1-0 in the OCAA semi-finals to advance to the gold medal game. The Lords will now take on the Fanshawe Falcons at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 23 at 3 p.m. at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. in the gold medal match.
“It was a total team effort in today’s win,” said Durham head coach Dave Staley. “We played a great game but we still have a lot of work to do. Fanshawe will be a tough opponent in tomorrow’s game.”
The Lords headed into Friday’s semi-final match considered by many as the underdog, with Humber going 12-0-0 during the regular season, earning the number one ranking in Canada. The Hawks were also the defending OCAA champions and are hosting nationals in two weeks.
Despite the tough match-up against the Hawks, the Lords stuck to their game plan and worked hard looking for the win. Humber goalkeeper Rosemary Ormeno provided the brightest highlight of the scoreless first half, stealing a glorious scoring opportunity away from the Lords on a penalty kick.
The Lords would opened up scoring midway through the second half, when freshman Daniela Calleri (Oshawa, Ont.) found the back of the net on a free kick. Ormeno was able to touch the shot enough to deflect it off of the crossbar, but was unable to change the direction enough to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
With seven minutes left in the game, OCAA Player of the Year and Humber striker Keyla Moreno had a breakaway, but Durham keeper Morgan Kelly (Oshawa, Ont.) came up with the save of the game, keeping the Humber offense off the board. Time eventually ran out on the Hawks as Durham advanced to the gold medal final with the 1-0 victory.
“Alyssa Best and the rest of the defence did a great job of keeping Keyla Moreno off the score sheet,” said Staley. “They controlled and contained the OCAA player of the year the entire game.”
The Lords now advance to the Belairdirect OCAA Women’s Soccer Championship gold medal game and face the Fanshawe Falcons. The championship game will kick off at 3 p.m.
This marks the sixth out of last eight years that the Lords will play for gold in the finals. In those eight years, the Lords have come away with four provincial titles. Durham has won five OCAA titles overall.
Daniela Calleri of Durham and Brittany Szcerbakow of the Hawks were named the Players of the Game.
Humber will play for bronze at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning as they will face their crosstown rival, the Sheridan Bruins.
