Durham College earns silver at the OCAA championship

VAUGHAN, Ont. – The Durham College women’s soccer team earned the OCAA silver medal on Saturday after losing 1-0 in the provincial final to Fanshawe College at the OSA soccer centre in Vaughan, Ont.

The silver medal marks the Lords eighth overall medal in OCAA women’s soccer, and their sixth in eight years.

In Saturday’s gold medal match, Alana Cornet would score the lone goal for Fanshawe, beating Durham goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Ontario, Ont.) in the minutes of the game.

Looking to contain the Durham attack, Fanshawe changed their formation and sat back in a defensive shell for the remainder of the game. Durham was unable to find the back of the net as Fanshawe held the nation’s top offense off the scoreboard to earn their sixth overall women’s soccer gold medal.

Cornet would earn the player of the game award for Fanshawe College while Alyssa Best (Oshawa, Ont.) won the honour for Durham, playing great defensively for the second straight game.

At the end of the championship, the championship host committee selected a championship all-star team. Daniela Calleri (Oshawa, Ont.), Durham’s goal scorer from Friday’s win over the number one ranked Humber Hawks earned the recognition for the Lords.

Durham finished the season with an 11-2-1 record, claiming there third ever silver medal (1992, 2002 and 2009). Fanshawe will advance to the CCAA National Championship, hosted by Humber College from November 4-7, 2009.

Humber defeated Sheridan 4-0 earlier in the day to win the OCAA bronze medal.
