Katie Watts named a CCAA All-Canadian – Lords quest for a provincial title starts tomorrow 
 
TORONTO –
Katie Watts of the Durham College women’s soccer team won top honours on Thursday night achieving national recognition being named a CCAA All-Canadian at the championship awards banquet in Toronto, Ont.

The event kicked off the weekend’s provincial championship at the OSA soccer centre in Vaughan, Ont., where the Lords will take on the Humber Hawks in the OCAA semi-finals on Friday afternoon at 12 p.m.

Watts (Oshawa, Ont.), had a tremendous season for Durham College, leading the team to the Central East region title with a 10-1-1 overall record. The league’s top striker scored 18 goals in 11 games this season, averaging 1.64 goals per game to lead the country.

Watts is joining elite company as Durham College women’s soccer players who have reached All-Canadian status. Tammy Baker (1993), Tracey Michaud (1995), Allison Gaverluk (1996), Tracey Weightman (1999), Laura Dixon (2003), Tina Foreman (2003), Kara Campbell (2004), Nicole Stephens (2005), Amanda Durno (2006) and Katie Szeghalmi (2007) all won the national award while playing for the green and gold.

As well as being named a CCAA All-Canadian, Watts was honoured as the OCAA and Regional scoring champion, while earning OCAA league all-star recognition.

The OCAA League Scoring Champion has come from Durham College for the past five seasons as Jana Cryderman took home the honour in 2005, Brittany Micucci in 2006, Katie Szeghalmi in 2007, and Katie Watts in 2008 & 2009.

Joining Watts as a league all-star was teammate Kirsten Walker (Whitby, Ont.) who scored nine goals in 11 games. The Lords entire team was also honoured at the banquet as the Central East region champions as well as winning the top defensive team award in the Central East region.
 
On the men’s side, Sebastian Dignoti (Whitby, Ont.) and Benn Vander Eyken (Minesing, Ont.) were named OCAA league all-stars. Dignoti, playing his first year for Durham College, was fourth overall in league scoring, second in East region scoring and first overall in freshman scoring. Vander Eyken provided solid defence for the Lords all season long.
