Lords open up the regular season with a win in Barrie

Women’s Basketball: Durham defeated Georgian 69-48

BARRIE, Ont. – The Durham Lords women’s basketball team spoiled the Georgian Grizzlies home opener on Wednesday night as they picked up a convincing 69-48 victory in Barrie.

”I am really proud of the way our team played tonight,” said Durham College head coach Tim Baulk. “We hit some clutch free throws late in the game that put the game away. Tonight's win was a total team effort.”

After going 0-3 at the Georgian Invitational last weekend, including a 58-38 loss to the Grizzlies, the Lords knew they needed a big effort in order to pick up the win.

Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.), Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) and Allison Cain (Newmarket, Ont.) all picked up double-doubles in the win, dominating the boards the entire night. Emery led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Cain tallied 14 points and 18 rebounds. Hare had a great OCAA debut scoring 13 points and picking up 11 rebounds.

Also scoring in double digits for the Lords was Laura Tomek (Blenheim, Ont.) and Janna Hagan (Sherwood Park, Albt.), who each scored 10 points.

The Lords would get out to a 30-24 halftime lead and manage to pull away in the second half capitalizing on Georgian fouls and converting free throw opportunities. Durham also shot 38 per cent from beyond the arc.

Durham will be back in action on Friday, October 30 as they travel to Peterborough to take on the Fleming Knights at 6 p.m. The Lords home opener is scheduled for Friday, November 6 against the Loyalist Lancers. Tip off at the CRWC is at 6 p.m.
