Women’s Soccer: Durham defeated Conestoga 3-0
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team advanced to this weekend’s OCAA Championship with a 3-0 victory over Conestoga College in quarter-final action on Tuesday night.
The Lords are now set to face Humber College in the provincial semi-finals, set to take place at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. on Friday, October 23 at 12 p.m. The event will kick off on Thursday, October 22 with the men’s and women’s soccer championship awards banquet.
This year marks the 13th straight season Durham has qualified for the OCAA final four. The Lords enter the championship with a 10-1-1 overall record and have the highest scoring offense in Canada averaging 5.4 goals per game.
Humber is the number one ranked team in Canada after going 13-0-0 this season, including a 1-0 overtime victory against Algonquin College on Monday. Both teams have had excellent defensive play this season as Durham allowed seven goals while Humber allowed four.
The game will also feature the league’s top strikers. Keyla Moreno of Humber College led the West Region averaging 1.30 goals per game while Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) of Durham College led the entire league with a 1.64 goals per game average.
On Tuesday night, the Lords got off to a great start against the Condors as Brianna Heard (Bowmanville, Ont.) scored the opening goal just seven minutes into the game, giving Durham a 1-0 lead.
After sitting back for the rest of the first half, Durham once again put the pressure on as Kirsten Walker (Whitby, Ont.) and Daniela Calleri (Oshawa, Ont.) scored second half markers to give Durham the 3-0 victory. Calleri's tally was a highlight reel goal as she had a beautiful strike from long range that beat the Conestoga keeper. Morgan Kelly picked up her ninth shutout of the season for Durham.
