HAMILTON, Ont. – For the second straight year, the Durham College women's fastball season ended in disappointment as they were defeated by the St. Clair Saints in the final two games of the OCAA Championship finals, as the Lords took home the silver medal.
The win for St. Clair marked the third provincial championship for the Saints, winning the crown in 2005 and 2008. Durham and St. Clair have combined to win the past eight OCAA provincial titles.
Durham went undefeated in the championship round in the double knock-out format, forcing St. Clair to need to beat Durham twice in order to take the Gold medal.
In the first championship game, St. Clair sprung out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning and managed to hold back the Durham offence. The Lords could only manage two runs in the fourth inning of the game, as St. Clair would win by a final score of 4-2. Player of the game honours went to Candice Gatecliffe of St. Clair and Shannon Ferguson of the Lords.
Game two was see-saw match up with both teams eyeing the championship title. The teams combined for eight runs in the first inning, with Durham scoring five and St. Clair with three. The Lords would add one more run to their lead in the second inning, in which they would hold up until the fourth inning.
St. Clair would go on to score two runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. Durham would score a single run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Saints would hold on for an 8-7 gold medal victory.
Janna Hagan of Durham earned her second player of the game award while Jennifer Gilroy earned the recognition for St. Clair.
Durham 's assistant coach Rosemary Theriault earned top honours at the OCAA Championship, winning the OCAA the fair play award, being recognized by the championship host committee. St. Clair's Candice Gatecliffe was named the top pitcher and Samantha Newton won the championship MVP award.
Finishing the season with silver medal, Durham extends their medal streak at the OCAA championship to 13 seasons. The Lords have won 27 medals at the OCAA Championship (14 gold, 9 silver, 4 bronze), the most of any college in league history.
