Lords look impressive against Seneca to move into top spot

Women’s Soccer: Durham defeated Seneca 3-1

NORTH YORK, Ont. – In a rematch of a pair of nationally ranked opponents, the Durham College women’s soccer team defeated the Seneca Sting 3-1 on Thursday night to take the lead in the Central East region.

”The team had a strong game against Seneca,” said Dave Staley, Durham College head coach. “We played well tonight especially in the second half. The entire team looked impressive.”

With the win, Durham moves into first place with an 8-1-1 record, one point up on Seneca who sits at 8-2-0. With a win over Cambrian in their regular season finale, Durham can clinch the regional title, earning a home playoff game which will be played early next week.

Kirsten Walker (Whitby, Ont.) was the difference maker against Seneca scoring at the 40 and 68 minute marks of the game. Walker now has eight goals this season, putting her in the top ten in OCAA league scoring. Freshman Taryn Nicholson (Newcastle, Ont.) scored her fifth goal of the year to round out scoring for Durham.

While OCAA leading scorer Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) was left off the scoresheet, the second year striker made a big impact in the game as she set up all three goals.

Trailing 3-0 with time winding down, Seneca would prevent Morgan Kelly (Oshawa, Ont.) from earning her eighth shutout of the year as they scored on a penalty shot.

On Saturday, October 17, the Lords will head to Sudbury to take on the Cambrian Golden Shield for their regular season finale. Game time is at 12 p.m.
