Durham College women’s fastball players earn national recognition
KITCHENER, Ont. – Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) and Samantha Roelofsen (Alma, Ont.) of the Durham College women’s fastball program earned national recognition this weekend for their performance at the 2009 Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch National Championship. Both players received top honours, being named to the national championship all-star team at their respective positions.
“We are very proud of our team’s performance at Nationals,” said Durham College head coach Jim Nemish. “We did a great job representing the college and it shows with both Erin and Sam receiving all-star recognition.”
With two members on the all-star team, Durham tied for the most all-star of any team along with Western Ontario and McMaster. Dewey (Short Stop) and Roelofsen (Outfield) were the only two college student-athletes to earn the all-star recognition.
The pair of sluggers went into nationals after having a great regular season. Roelofsen won the OCAA triple crown, finishing first in every offensive category. She won the league batting title averaging .594, the highest total of any OCAA player since 1998. She also led the league in hits (22), runs (19) and RBI’s (15).
Dewey finished the season with a .463 average along with 19 hits, 14 runs and 13 RBI’s. Dewey’s career batting average is .505 in two seasons, making her the OCAA’s all-time career batting leader, breaking a record that has stood since 1992.
The two teams that eliminated Durham at the national championship went on to finish one-two with Laurier winning gold and Saskatchewan finishing with silver. Western would round out the podium winning the bronze medal.
Durham will now have their sights set on the OCAA provincial championship, set to take place at Mohawk College from October 16-17, 2009.
