Lords fall to George Brown 2-1 at BMO Field

Men’s Soccer: George Brown defeated Durham 2-1

TORONTO –
The Durham College men’s soccer team’s playoff hopes took a hit on Tuesday night as the Lords were defeated by a score of 2-1 against the George Brown Huskies at BMO Field in Toronto.

Durham falls to 4-2-3 on the year and is in third place in the Central East Region. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Lords will need to come out with a pair of victories and hope to get some help as they chase Seneca (6-1-2) for the final playoff position. Durham and Seneca will meet up on Thursday, October 15 in North York at 7:15 p.m. with a playoff position on the line.

Stan Bombino’s team played well on Tuesday night against the first place Huskies, but were unable to score on a number of chances, as the team’s played the first ever OCAA soccer game on BMO Field.

”I thought our team played well for the majority of the game,” said Bombino. “We were not intimidated or nervous playing here (BMO Field) and we deserved a better result. We will now just have to go out and win our final two games.”

The teams traded first half goals, with Durham’s Thomas Santibancz-Espinosa (Milton, Ont.) netting his first goal in seven games this season. Noel Ellerton was the goal scorer for the Huskies, notching his East region leading 12th goal of the season.

After several close calls in the second half, it looked as if Durham had caught a break as George Brown’s Nikola Milosevic was sent off with a red card. However, just minutes later, Durham’s captain Nick Zdravkovski (Oshawa, Ont.) was also shown a red card, after making a tackle on a streaking forward, evening the sides up at ten apiece.

As soon as Zdravkovski exited the game, the door opened for the Huskies offence. Second year striker Peter Bailey managed to find the back of the net in the final ten minutes of the game, giving the Huskies the 2-1 advantage and the win.

After their match against Seneca on Thursday, the Lords will close out their season on Saturday, October 17 in Sudbury against the Cambrian Golden Shield. Game time is at 2 p.m.
