KITCHENER, Ont. – Day two started out on the bright side for the Durham College women’s fastball team after finishing as the number one seed in round robin play at the 2009 Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch National Championship. However, things turned around quite quickly as the Lords lost two tight games in the playoff round, eliminating the team from the National championship.
The Lords opened up day two action with a 7-4 come from behind win over the University of Saskatchewan to finish the round robin a 3-0. The Huskies managed to get out to a first inning 4-0 lead, but the Lords came back with seven runs over the final three innings of the game to pick up the win, clinching the number one seed heading into the playoff round.
Up against the host Laurier Golden Hawks in the quarter-finals, Durham would suffer their first loss of the championship falling in a heartbreaker by a final score of 4-3. With the win, Laurier would advance to the semi-finals and guarantee themselves a medal for the third straight year at the championship.
In the double elimination format, Durham’s hopes for a national championship were still alive as they squared off against Saskatchewan in a rematch of their first game of the day. This time, the Huskies would get the better of the Lords as they would end up with a 3-1 win, eliminating Durham from the tournament.
Saskatchewan would be the Achilles heel of the OCAA schools in the national championship, as they eliminated St. Clair College with a 5-4 win prior to their game with Durham.
On Monday, Laurier and Western will meet up in the semi-finals with a berth to the national title game on the line. The loser of that match will have one more shot to advance to the finals as they will meet the winner of the Saskatchewan/Ottawa match-up.
Durham will now have their sights set on the OCAA provincial championship, set to take place at Mohawk College from October 16-17, 2009.
