Lords advance to the Provincial Championship with a semi-final sweep over York
CIBA Ontario Semi-Finals (Durham wins series 2-0)
Game One –Durham defeated York 12-4
Game Two – Durham defeated York 11-3
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College baseball team booked their trip to the CIBA Ontario finals with two wins over York University on Saturday. The Lords swept York in the best-of-three semi-finals defeating the Lions by scores of 12-4 and 11-3.
Durham will now meet up with the regular season champion St. Clair Saints in the Ontario Finals. Games one and two will be held in Windsor on Saturday, October 17. If the teams spilt their doubleheader out West, the third and deciding game will take place on Sunday, October 18 at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium.
For Durham, this will mark the 12th straight year the Lords have advanced to the provincial finals. The team has won four straight CIBA Ontario championships, including last season where they defeated St. Clair 2-1 in the third and deciding game.
Saturday’s game one match against York was much closer than the final score would indicate. The Lords made some costly mistakes in the early stages of the game, falling behind 4-0 to the Lions. Durham bats would finally wake up in the fifth inning, as the team would cut the Lions lead in half at 4-2.
Trailing in the bottom of the sixth inning, Durham’s Jareth Vallier hit a towering shot that cleared the fence in right centre field for a grand slam to give Durham their first lead of the game. The team would continue the rally, putting up 10 runs in the frame to take game one by a final score of 12-4. Durham pitcher Lucas Sharpe looked very impressive coming out of the bullpen allowing one run in three innings to pick up his first win of the year.
In game two of the series, the Lords made the most of their opportunities as they scored 11 runs on nine hits to win by a final score of 11-3. Gary Rose pitched the complete game for Durham, allowing five hits and three runs, all of which were unearned.
The Lords have won nine of their past 10 games, continuing their hot streak down the stretch. If Durham hopes to win their fifth straight provincial title, they will have to find a way to defeat St. Clair, something they did not do in six games during the regular season.
