Legendary Durham College golfer inducted into Oshawa’s Sports Hall of Fame
Oshawa, Ont. – It was a night of celebration in Oshawa on Wednesday as the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame inducted five new members. Included in the class of 2009 was Durham College Business Administration ('91) graduate and legendary collegiate golfer Ryan Hughes for his achievements while representing the College.
Hughes is no stranger to Hall of Fame ceremonies as he was inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame on April 7th, 2000 as well as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Hall of Fame on April, 30th, 2003.
Hughes entered the Hall of Fame in front of a crowd of over 300 guests along with Gordon Mackenzie Myles (hockey player), Fred Whalley (builder), Jim Hinkson (lacrosse player and coach) and Andrew David Stewart (baseball player). Stewart also has a connection with Durham College, as he is the son of former Durham College athletic director David Stewart.
"This is an outstanding achievement for Ryan, whose record of four consecutive OCAA Golf Championships while representing Durham College, most definitely merits this Hall of Fame award,” remarked Ken Babcock, Durham College Athletic Director. “This news reflects positively on Durham College and the City of Oshawa. His record will be nearly impossible to break and ranks right up their with records such as Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak, Wayne Gretzky's 200 point seasons, and Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points in a single NBA game. Truly an amazing accomplishment for a truly special individual. We are all extremely proud of Ryan here at Durham College and his recent induction into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame."
