Lords earn a final four finish at the OCAA indoor soccer championship

VAUGHAN, Ont. – The Durham College women’s indoor soccer team ran into some bad luck on the final day of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women’s indoor soccer championship as they picked up two losses in the medal round finishing in fourth place.

In a rematch of the 2009 outdoor soccer gold medal game, the Lords found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against the Fanshawe Falcons in semi-final action. Fanshawe would score the game’s lone goal early in the match on a controversial non-call by the official, that would send the Falcons to the finals. The Lords outplayed and out chanced Fanshawe in the game, but could not find a way to beat Fanshawe goalkeeper Emily Gillet, mirroring the outdoor final.

In the bronze medal game against Central East Region rival Seneca College, overtime was necessary to decide a winner. In the extra frame, Seneca would come out on top with a 2-1 victory, claiming the bronze medal.

For Durham, it was their second straight trip to the OCAA final four at the indoor soccer championship.

Dave Staley, who completed his first season as head coach of the Durham College women’s soccer program, had quite a successful year. Along with the indoor soccer final four finish, Staley led the outdoor team to a provincial silver medal, regional championship and was named the Durham College team of the year at the 40th annual Durham College athletic banquet.
