Durham College advances to the medal round at the OCAA Championship

VAUGHAN, Ont. – The Durham College women’s soccer team pulled out a 2-0 victory over Fleming College in their final game of the day to advance to the semi-finals at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championship in Vaughan, Ont.

The Lords needed a victory over the Knights to have any shot of advancing to the semi-finals after opening the championship with a 0-1-1 record. Shira Wickenheiser (Duchess, Ont.) and Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) made sure the Lords would advance to day two as they found the back of the net for DC, pulling out a 2-0 victory.

Durham opened up the championship with a 1-1 tie against Conestoga, followed by a 2-0 loss to Humber. Wickenheiser scored the lone goal against the Condors. Although the Lords and Conestoga finished with matching 1-1-1 records, Durham advanced to the semi-finals due to tie-breaking procedures.

Tomorrow’s semi-final game (10 a.m.) will be a rematch of the OCAA outdoor gold medal finals as the Lords take on the Fanshawe Falcons (London, Ont.). Durham will be looking for revenge as Fanshawe won gold back in October with a 1-0 victory over the Lords. Fanshawe finished round robin play with a 2-0-1 record, good enough for first place in pool B. In the other semi-final, Humber will face off against the Seneca Sting.

The Lords will look to claim their third OCAA women’s indoor soccer provincial title in seven years, with their last title coming in 2007. From 2003 to 2007, Durham earned a medal in four of five championships. This is the first year Dave Staley is the head coach of the team.
