Durham advances to the indoor soccer provincials

VAUGHAN, Ont.
– For the second straight season, the Durham College women’s indoor soccer team is heading to the provincial finals after finishing in second place at the OCAA Central East Region Championship this week, booking a spot at the OCAA Championship.

The Lords will meet up with the top eight teams at the OCAA Championship which is set to take place from March 25-26, 2010 at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont.

The Lords started the regionals off with a bang as they defeated the George Brown Huskies by a final score of 4-0. Goal scorers in the match were Shira Wickenheiser (Duchess, Ont.) and Jenn Sheehan (Whitby, Ont.), who had two goals apiece.

The Lords followed up the opening round win with two more victories ,defeating Centennial (1-0) and Canadore (5-0) to clinch a spot at the provincials. Daniela Calleri (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the lone goal against Centennial, while Sheehan, Wickenheiser, Brianna Heard (Bowmanville, Ont.), and Katie Watts - 2 (Oshawa, Ont.) found the back of the net against Canadore.

Durham’s only loss of the regional championship came against Seneca, who defeated the Lords by a score of 4-2. Wickenheiser and Watts were the goal scorers for Durham.

Seneca finished in first place with a 4-0-0 record while Durham was second at 3-1-0. The two rivals will be in separate pools at the OCAA championship.

The Lords will look to win their third OCAA provincial title in seven years, with their last title coming in 2007.
