Lords well represented on the European Soccer stage this summer
OSHAWA, Ont. – As the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) varsity soccer season is on hiatus for the summer break, coaches and athletes alike are using the time off to sharpen their skills. Durham Lords men's assistant soccer coach Mario Bombino is no exception as he is preparing to take a women's team from Woodbridge to Italy for tournament play later this month.
Bombino will be coaching the Woodbridge Azzurri women's soccer club who will represent Canada as they take part in an international tournament that will see them do battle against teams representing England, Belgium, Italy and Norway. He will also have a chance to coach along side Canadian national women's soccer team head coach Carolina Morace, as she will be assisting the Woodbridge team.
In addition to coach Bombino, the team will have an additional Durham Lords presence as several former Lords players suiting up for Woodbridge including Brittany Micucci (2007-2009), 2007 OCAA Player of the Year Amanda Durno (2006-2007), Megan Durno (2006), Jessica Kollard (2003) and Julia Prohaska (2002-2003).
“This will be an incredible experience for myself and the girls on the team,” said coach Bombino. “The players hope to get some exposure to teams in Europe and showcase their skills and talents to the international coaches that will be in attendance. This team from Canada is going to show the European teams that we can really play soccer.”
Stan Bombino (Durham College men's soccer head coach) played an instrumental part on helping the team travel to Italy. Through promotion of the event, Bombino was able to get financial support from the various soccer organizations across the region including the Durham Region Soccer Association, the Peterborough City Soccer Association and the Eastern Central Soccer Association. The funds donated by these organizations are being used to offset the costs to the players from the Durham Region and Peterborough.
The team will be leaving for Italy on June 20 and returning on July 3 for the tournament.
Both the Lords men's and women's soccer teams will begin their regular season at Vaso's Field on Saturday, September 12, 2009 against the St. Lawrence Vikings.
