Durham College men's basketball adds size to the roster with three new recruits

OSHAWA, Ont.
– After a successful 2008-09 campaign, the Durham College men's basketball team is in the process of re-tooling to improve on their 16-4 regular season record. Lords head coach Desmond Rowley is pleased to announce the addition of Tyler McGarrity (Ajax, Ont.), Mckasey Samuel (Brampton, Ont.) and Ryan Frazer (Brampton, Ont.) to the 2009-10 lineup.

McGarrity is a 6-5 guard/forward who comes to Durham with plenty of post-secondary basketball experience. McGarrity spent the 2006-07 season in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) with the St. Clair Saints. In half a season with St. Clair, he averaged 14.3 points per game, including a career high 41 points in a single game. Prior to joining the Saints, he played 21 games in 2004-05 with the University of Windsor Lancers. A graduate of Markham High School, McGarrity was his high school team MVP as well as the York Region player of the year for the Markham High Marauders.

“Tyler will bring size and experience to our team,” said Rowley. “Through past experience, he has shown he can do the job and we're looking forward to having him on our team this season.”

Mckasey Samuel comes to Durham College from Cardinal Leger Secondary School in Brampton. The 6-5 forward averaged nearly 18 points and eight rebounds per game for Cardinal Leger. Last season, he was named to the Peel Region All-Stars top-40 list for his outstanding performance.

“Mckasey is a big man who can play in the post,” said Rowley. “It will be great to have that big inside presence to take some pressure off Eric Smith down low.”

Also out of Brampton is 6-3 small forward Ryan Frazer. Frazer just completed a stellar career at Harold M. Brathwaite while playing club basketball for the Brampton Warriors. Last season in Brampton, Frazer was a scoring threat whenever he stepped onto the court as he averaged 17.0 points per game.

“Ryan is a natural scorer who will be a great fit into the lineup,” added Rowley. “He has proved in the club system and throughout high school that opposing teams better be on top of their game when he is on the court.”

With the addition of McGarrity, Samuel and Frazer, the Lords have added some size, which the team lacked in 2008-09. Last year's team had plenty of success as they recorded the most regular season wins of any Durham Lords men's team since the 1988-89 (16-2). The squad's 16-4 finish was good enough for third place in the East region and despite the loss of OCAA all-time leading scorer Anthony Batchelor (Markham, Ont.) to graduation, the team is looking to improve on last year's result.
