Humber wins back-to-back Adidas Cup Titles
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Humber Hawks won their second consecutive Adidas Cup title on Saturday as they knocked off the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 in the championship final. The Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre has been kind to Humber as of late as the Hawks have won two Adidas Cup titles and the 2009 OCAA provincial championship crown in Oshawa over the past two seasons.
Humber, who came into the tournament ranked second in Ontario, knocked off the top ranked Nipissing Lakers in the championship final in three straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-17). The two sides have built quite the rivalry having met in the provincial finals in four straight years.
The Hawks advanced to the finals after a 3-0 victory over the host Durham Lords in the semi-finals by set scores of 27-25, 27-25 and 25-12. The Lords would rebound with a win to capture third place with a 3-1 victory over he Loyalist Lancers. Set scores were 25-15, 25-20, 17-25 and 27-25.
Kendra Todd (Humber) was named the Adidas Cup MVP for her performance over the two day tournament. Mandi Buma (Loyalist), Kourtney Cyr (Durham), Ashley Hummel (Nipissing), Stephanie Stubbert (Nipissing), Laura Bye (Humber) and Landis Doyle (Humber) were all recognized as tournament all-stars.
The Lords will resume conference action on Wednesday, January 13 at Seneca College. Durham’s next home game is on Saturday, January 23 against the Boreal Viperes at noon.
