Top ranked volleyball teams in Ontario heading to Oshawa for the 2010 DC Adidas Cup
OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College is set to host the top collegiate female volleyball teams in Ontario at the 22nd annual Adidas Cup from January 8-9, 2010.
The tournament will serve off the new year of OCAA women’s volleyball, with play set to commence on Friday, January 8 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre (CRWC) at noon. Play will continue throughout Saturday, January 9 with the championship final scheduled for 5 p.m.
Led by second year head coach Shane Christopher, Durham College has got out to a great start this season as they sit alone in first place in the OCAA East Region with a 9-1 record. The Lords have dominated their opponents only dropping six sets in ten conference matches.
Durham will have to be on top of their game if they hope to win this year’s edition of the tournament as the defending champion Humber Hawks (Etobicoke, Ont.) make their return to the CRWC. Last year at Durham College, the Hawks won their fourth Adidas Cup title in nine years, as well as the OCAA provincial championship. Humber is 9-1 in conference action this season and is ranked tenth in all of Canada.
The OCAA top-ranked Nipissing Lakers (North Bay, Ont.) also look to take a run at the title, which they last won in 2007. Nipissing is 10-1 this season, sitting in first place in the West Region. Last year, the Lakers fell in the provincial finals to the Hawks to take home the silver medal.
This year’s tournament field is full of top teams including the Canadore Panthers (North Bay, Ont.), Georgian Grizzlies (Barrie, Ont.), Loyalist Lancers (Belleville, Ont.), Niagara Knights (Welland, Ont.), St. Clair Saints (Windsor, Ont.), Seneca Sting (North York, Ont.), and Sheridan Bruins (Oakville, Ont.).
2010 will mark the 22nd anniversary of the Durham College women’s volleyball tournament, but will feature best three of five matches for the first time. Friday’s action will consist of round robin play (best of two), followed by the playoffs (best three of five) that will take place on Saturday.
Over the last ten years, the Lords made their only championship final appearance in 2003-04, where they went on to defeat the Cambrian Golden Shield 2-1 to win the cup. This year, they look to change their luck as they enter the tournament picking up sweeps in their last four conference matches.
The DC Adidas Cup has become highly regarded in the volleyball community and is one of the biggest and most anticipated invitational tournaments on the CCAA sports calendar. The tournament will be a preview for the OCAA Provincial Championships, scheduled to take place at Cambrian College from February 25-27, 2010.
