Lords win their third straight game with a double-digit victory over Georgian
Women’s Basketball: Durham defeated Georgian 82-61 (Box Score attached)
OSHAWA, Ont. – Jessica Newton of Oshawa, Ont. scored 27 points to lead Durham College to a 82-61 victory over the Georgian Grizzlies at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre on Friday.
The Lords’ 81 point performance was one point shy of their highest offensive output this season, as they cruised to their seventh conference win of the year and their third straight victory. The Lords are 7-5 and sit in fourth place of the East Region standings.
Newton was on fire Friday night going 10-for-16 from the floor in just under 20 minutes of play. She was also perfect from the free throw line for the third straight game, going 4-for-4 on Friday. She has drained 18 straight free throws in the Lords current three game winning streak.
Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) and Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) also had the scoring touch as they recorded 17 points respectively. The Lords one-two punch also combined for 13 rebounds and five steals in the win.
Head coach Tim Baulk (ChPC) used his entire bench on Friday as nine players saw seven or more minutes playing time. The Lords capitalized on Georgian mistakes all night long as they outscored the Grizzlies 26-9 on points off of turnovers.
The Lords swept the season series over Georgian and have won 8 of 9 conference games against the Grizzlies.
With a 7-5 conference record, the Lords sit in fourth place in the east region standings, four points ahead of the St. Lawrence Vikings (5-5). The last time Durham finished over .500 in women’s basketball was in 2005-06, also the last year Durham has hosted a playoff game.
Durham will look to keep the winning streak alive as they host Seneca College on Tuesday, February 9 at 6 p.m.
