First place showdown lives up to the hype – Doris becomes DC’s leader in kills

Women’s Volleyball: Cambrian defeated Durham 3-2 (25-19, 28-26, 23-25, 12-25, 15-13)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women’s volleyball team was on the wrong end of a marathon match on Sunday as the Cambrian Golden Shield defeated the Lords 3-2 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre. Set scores were 25-19, 28-26, 23-25, 12-25 and 15-13.

Durham (12-2), Cambrian (12-3) and Trent (12-3) all sit on the top of the regional leaderboard with 12 wins apiece. However, Durham has one game in hand on the Golden Shield and Excalibur with six games remaining in the regular season.

Team captain Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) made history on Sunday as she became the Durham College all-time leader in kills with 421 in her career, passing Erin Smith who had 417. Doris also moved into the fourth spot in OCAA career points. Doris has 706 total points, passing Claire Bramma of RMC who had 705.

The Lords 21 set winning streak came to an end in a hurry against Cambrian as the Golden Shield took the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 28-26. With their backs against the wall, Durham managed to fight back with two set victories of their own, edging out Cambrian 25-23 in the third set and 25-12 in the fourth set.

In the fifth and deciding set, it was the Golden Shield who came out on top winning by a final score of 15-13. The Lords had trouble containing east region leading scorer Shawna Metcalf who finished with 19 total points (14 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks) and 17 digs.

Leading the Lords for the second straight match was Kerri Fotherby (Newcastle, Ont.), who recorded 19 points (16 kills, 3 aces) and 14 digs. Allison and Mandi Doris combined for 26 points in the losing effort.

The two teams have had quite the battle this season. In their first meeting in Sudbury, Durham defeated Cambrian 3-2, therefore splitting the season series with five set wins apiece.

Durham will face Trent University on Wednesday, January 27 for another important matchup in the east region standings. The Lords next home action is on Friday, February 5 against La Cite at 6 p.m.
