Durham College continues to roll with a comeback win in Belleville
Women’s Basketball: Durham defeated Loyalist 53-48
BELLEVILLE, Ont. – The Durham College women’s basketball overcame some adversity on Thursday night as they defeated the Loyalist Lancers 53-48. Trailing by six points in the second half with team captain and leading scorer Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) sidelined with an injury, the Lords rallied in the late stages of the game going on a 12-3 run to secure their second win this week.
”Tonight’s win was a total team effort,” said Durham College head coach Tim Baulk (ChPC). “As we ran into foul trouble early on and suffered some tough injuries, the entire team stepped up to get the two points.”
The Lords were sharp from the three point down the stretch as Alicia Del Fuoco (Whitby, Ont.), Janna Hagan (Sherwood Park, Alta.) and Jessica Newton (Oshawa, Ont.) drained four shots from beyond the arc in the second half. Newton also made an impact from the free throw line, going perfect (6-for-6) for the second straight game.
Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) and Del Fuoco scored a team high 12 points apiece for Durham, while Watts added eight steals in the win. Emery finished the game with 11 points, despite sitting out the entire second half with an injury.
Rookie sensation Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) had double digits in rebounds for the second straight game, finishing with a team high 11 boards. Hare is second in the province in total rebounds with 101 in 11 games.
Brittany Denneny scored 19 points and added 13 rebounds for the Lancers while teammate Sheawna Lorch scored eight points and 15 rebounds.
Durham is now 6-5 in conference play and sits two points ahead of St. Lawrence College (5-3) for fourth place in the East region standings. The Lords next action is at home on Friday, January 29 against Georgian College (4-6). Game time at the CRWC is at 6 p.m.
