Lords defence up to the task against Loyalist

Men’s Basketball: Durham defeated Loyalist 80-57

BELLEVILLE, Ont. – Eric Smith ( Ajax, Ont.) scored 27 points and 18 rebounds as the Durham College men’s basketball team cruised to a 80-57 victory over the Loyalist Lancers in Belleville on Thursday night.

The Lords improve to 11-4 on the season and have won six of their past seven games, good enough for second place in the East Region. With the loss, the Lancers fall to 2-11.

The driving force behind the Lords success has been team defence, which has held their opponents to 58 points or less in four of their last five games. Tyler Pelley (Ajax, Ont.), Courtney Small (Oshawa, Ont.) and Smith are 1-2-3 in OCAA total steals as they have recorded 74, 42 and 39 respectively. In Thursday’s win, the Lords outscored the Lancers 21-10 on points off of turnovers.

Smith was outstanding for Durham recording another double-double. With 18 rebounds (eight of which were on offence), the second year starter has 138 total rebounds to lead the province. The Lords won the rebound battle 49-33 over Loyalist.

Courtney Small had another great game scoring 16 points, moving him into the top ten in all-time Durham College scoring. Over the last three games, Small has averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds, really stepping up his game after the holiday break.

Durham’s will now look ahead to their next home game on Friday, January 29 against the Georgian Grizzlies. Tip-off at the CRWC is at 8 p.m.
