Durham College men’s basketball team supporting the Haiti Earthquake relief efforts

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men’s basketball team and the Caribbean & African SA (CASA) have teamed up with the Samuel Dalembert Foundation to raise funds to go towards Haiti Earthquake relief efforts.

At every remaining Durham College basketball home game, the Lords will be accepting donations that will go towards the foundation and the Haiti Earthquake relief. The team will also be holding a raffle for an Adidas/NBA prize pack with all proceeds going towards the cause. Starting next week, tickets will be on sale at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre front desk.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Dalembert spent the first 14 years of his life in Haiti before moving to Montreal. He is the only active Haitian player in the NBA. The 28-year-old Philadelphia 76ers centre’s foundation’s mission is to better the lives of the people of Haiti and children all over the world through projects that empower individuals to seek out and achieve sustainable improvements in their daily lives.

Dalembert received the NBA Community Assist Award in February (2009) in recognition of his outstanding efforts through his foundation in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic and charitable work.

The Durham College men’s basketball team encourages everyone to come out and support the Haiti relief effort at their remaining home games. For more information on the Samuel Dalembert Foundation, please visit www.dalembertfoundation.org.

Message from the Samuel Dalembert Foundation:
“As most people now know, on January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the nation of Haiti, just outside the capital city Port-au-Prince. Millions of people in the City and surrounding areas are affected. Samuel himself has a great many family members and friends living in Port-au-Prince who are now living in a state of fear and desperation. The focus right now must be on getting medical aid, food, water, and shelter to the people of Port-au-Prince. Getting these supplies into the City was a logistical challenge even before the earthquake, making the task seem almost impossible now. However, with prayer and assistance from people throughout the world we can start to help the people of Haiti who already suffer enough in their day to day lives. Please consider making a donation to the Samuel Dalembert Foundation or to any other organization that is actively assisting in the relief effort. Thank you, and please keep Haiti and its people in your thoughts and prayers.”
